NAIOP IE donates $25,000 to help offset costs of computers, internet service for Fontana students

FONTANA – NAIOP Inland Empire, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association has donated $25,000 to the Fontana Unified School District (FUSD) to help pay for laptop computers for students starting the school year under a distance-learning model.

The donation was presented to Superintendent of Schools Randall Bassett during a video interview with Mayor Acquanetta Warren to talk about plans for the upcoming school year against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic. Under orders from Gov. Gavin Newsom, schools in most California counties – including San Bernardino – are prohibited from opening their campuses until they are off the state’s coronavirus watch list for 14 days.

“NAIOP IE is proud to support the Fontana Unified School District with a $25,000 contribution to purchase laptop computers for its students,” said NAIOP IE President Steve Haston. “The contribution will help our children, hard-working teachers and dedicated administrators with the challenges of distance learning in the new school year. We are proud of the strong partnership that our Industry shares with the City of Fontana, it’s residents and our local school district.”

Warren, who created the Fontana Mayor’s Education Coalition to promote cross-sector partnerships, said the NAIOP donation is a shining example of a community rallying around its schools during a time of need.

“We want our kids back in school, but not at the expense of their health or safety,” Warren said. “Distance learning isn’t an ideal situation for many of our students and families, who might not have access to computer, internet service or other resources to successfully work from home. NAIOP’s generous contribution comes at such a critical time, and on behalf of the Coalition, I’m urging others to please consider helping out.”
